Apple iPhone Duo Unveiled: Foldable Design, 7.6-Inch Display, A20 Pro and More
Apple has finally jumped into the foldable smartphone market with its first foldable iPhone, iPhone Duo. The new gadget features a large foldable screen and Apple's hardware, software and AI technologies.
Apple says that iPhone Duo will offer the biggest screen ever on an iPhone, and it will only be so big that it is easy to carry when folded up.
iPhone Duo Brings Apple's First Foldable Design
The most significant alteration is in the form factor, which is now a foldable.
iPhone Duo's outer display is a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display when it's opened. Users will have the outer display measuring 5.4“ when folded.
Apple claims that the inner screen area is half the size of the display on the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the outer display covers around 90 percent of the iPhone 18 Pro screen area.
The displays are oriented in the same aspect ratio which allows content to seamlessly switch between folded and unfolded modes.
The displays also feature ProMotion, Always-On and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The inner finish of the display is nano-textured to help reduce glare and reflections and to make the fold less noticeable.
Titanium Construction and New Hinge
Durability is a key concern for Apple's.
iPhone Duo enclosure made of grade 5 titanium, shiny finish. The phone employs a precision hinge, with over 100 components.
The hinge ensures the center of the display remains supported when the device is opened.
The iPhone Duo also claims to be splash, water and dust resistant (IP68).
Apple claims that Ceramic Shield 2, the outer display, is three times as scratch resistant as before.
A20 Pro Powers iPhone Duo
Apple's new A20 Pro chip, which it used in the iPhone 18 Pro models, is located within the phone.
According to Apple, the A20 Pro will be equipped with a 6-core CPU, 7-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engine.
Apple says the CPU is up to 20 percent faster than its A19 Pro and the GPU up to 40 percent faster and more efficient at using power.
The Neural Engine also offers double the compute power when it comes to on-device AI workloads.
To ensure optimal performance during intensive tasks like gaming, multitasking, and AI processing, the phone features custom vapor chamber and advanced thermal-management system.
Apple claims that its iPhone Duo can offer up to 35 percent higher sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro.
Dual-Battery Design
This foldability has prompted Apple to adopt a novel battery design in which the two sides of the device have each got a battery with a high energy density.
According to Apple, this system can offer:
- Up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner display
- Maximum playback of up to 44 hours with the outer display
- 24 hours (total) if both displays used equally
Fast charging completes 50 percent within about 20 minutes and Wireless charging completes 50 percent in about 30 minutes with a compatible MagSafe or Qi2 charger.
48MP Camera System
Another important component of iPhone Duo is the camera system.
It boasts a 48MP Fusion Main camera, and 2x Telephoto with optical quality.
The camera will take 48MP photos and leverage computational photography to enhance detail and capture in low light, according to Apple.
The phone's camera is also 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, offering more wide-angle and macro shots.
The folding design gives rise to a number of new camera features.
For instance, the outer display can serve as a preview screen for users to view when taking photos with the rear cameras. This can simplify the taking of higher quality selfies with the more capable rear camera setup.
The phone also has the ability to access the various Smart Take, Duo Preview, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime features.
The Fusion Main camera supports 4K video at 120 frames per second (fps) in Dolby Vision mode.
iOS 27 Designed for the Foldable Display
Apple has made some changes to iOS 27 to make better use of the increased screen size.
The most significant of these is multitasking.
Split View lets users open two apps side-by-side. They can also open two windows within the same application, e.g., Safari.
This allows the larger screen to be helpful with research, comparison shopping, messaging, document editing and entertainment.
StandBy has also been expanded to allow for the phone to serve as a display for widgets, photographs, clock and other information.
Apple Intelligence and Siri AI
iPhone Duo also gets Apple's new artificial intelligence innovations.
The new Siri AI will put a new understanding into the context of the user and communicate with information in different apps like Messages, Mail and Photos.
Siri can read a display and make decisions based on it, Apple claims.
Features include image editing, Clean Up, Image Playground and other Apple Intelligence experiences.
According to Apple, its AI architecture relies on the ability to keep information private, by leveraging on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute.
Apple Pencil Support
Apple is also adding Apple Pencil support to Apple's iPhone Duo.
The phone will also be compatible with Apple Pencil later this year via USB-C, and will enable users to take notes, sketch and mark up documents.
This might come in handy for productivity, especially when it comes to the big inner screen.
iPhone Duo Price and Availability
The iPhone Duo is available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB of storage, and will retail for $1,999 in the U.S.
It comes in two colors: star white and night sky.
The pre-orders will begin October 16, 2026, and it will go on sale October 23 in over 70 countries and in India.
