Apple iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max Launched With A20 Pro, 48MP Variable Aperture Camera and More

Apple has officially announced the launch of the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with its most significant enhancements and improvements to the camera system, performance, battery life, and artificial intelligence.

The new Pro models are running on the A20 Pro chip, and feature a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, which means they provide users with greater control over pictures than previous-generation iPhones.

Apple has also enhanced Dynamic Island, thermal management, connectivity and battery performance as well as introduced new AI features with iOS 27 and Siri AI.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Camera Gets a Major Upgrade

One of the biggest changes in the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is the camera system.

Both models are equipped with an all-new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. The feature of adjustable aperture control is new to the iPhone.

The camera employs 6 laser cut blades that allow it to adjust the aperture based on the lighting conditions and the kind of photograph it is taking.

The system can automatically adjust the aperture or can manually choose from four aperture options.

A wider aperture will let in more light to the sensor and may be helpful in darker conditions. A smaller aperture will make the background more in focus (deeper depth of field).

The new camera also can capture sharper images, especially in low-light environments and in group photos, Apple states.

New Pro Controls for Photography

Apple is also adding support for Pro controls in its Camera app.

Users are able to fine-tune the following parameters:

  • Aperture
  • Shutter speed
  • White balance
  • Displays information about exposure using a histogram.

This allows photographers to adjust the image more to their liking without going into the automatic camera setting.

Photographic Styles has also been enhanced with new texture and grain controls, which users can tweak to change the look of photos.

Improved Video Features

The new video features are also added to the iPhone 18 Pro variants.

Some of the Cinematic effects can be applied to videos taken at up to 60fps.

New Time-lapse recording capability for 4K and Dolby Vision HDR.

Apple has also made enhancements to Audio Mix, adding new algorithms for clearer voices and greater separation between music and other sounds.

Apple Reference Image Helps Verify Original Photos

There's also another cool feature on the camera, which is called Apple Reference Image.

If turned on, the iPhone will be able to take signed sensor information as well as a picture. According to Apple, this will generate an unchangeable reference image to be displayed alongside the typical photo.

The functionality will allow the user to compare an original reference to an edited picture, so as to assist the photographer, journalist or other user in comparing the two.

In addition, Apple claims future support for the SynthID standard will assist in identifying some of the AI-generated or AI-edited images.

A20 Pro Chip Powers the New iPhones

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are powered by Apple's new A20 Pro chip.

The chip is built with a 2-nanometer process, and features a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, 7-core GPU and 6-core CPU.

A20 Pro will be Apple's most powerful iPhone to date, with 50 percent more memory bandwidth than A19 Pro and up to 40 percent faster GPU than the previous generation.

The Neural Engine aims to deliver much greater processing power for on-device AI and computational photography.

This implies the new chip will not just enhance day-to-day performance and gaming, but also support Apple's expanding AI capabilities.

Better Sustained Performance With New Thermal System

There are also changes to the thermal-management system.

The iPhone 18 Pro comes with a newly upgraded vapor chamber that has three times the surface area of the one that previously had been offered in the iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple says the new system delivers as much as 40 percent more sustained performance than the previous-generation system.

This will be beneficial for challenging applications like video processing, extended AI workloads, and gaming.

Redesigned Dynamic Island

It's also updated the Dynamic Island.

The latest redesign of the Dynamic Island will enable users to view up to three Live Activities at once, without having to switch to another app, according to Apple.

The Dynamic Island still serves as a Face ID unlock and authentication and secure purchases on the iPhone.

Major Battery Life Improvements

But battery life is also a big priority for the new Pro line.

The eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro is capable of 36 hours of video playback, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is capable of 45 hours of video playback.

Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max battery boost is the biggest battery-life boost yet for an iPhone.

The iPhone 18 Pro is capable of reaching about 50 percent charge in about 15 minutes with compatible wired charging gear.

The Pro Max is also receiving a commendable upgrade in charging as Apple claims to be able to charge the device for five minutes and get approximately seven hours of video playback, under its testing.

iOS 27 and Siri AI

The new iPhones debut with iOS 27 and Apple's new generation Apple Intelligence features.

The greatest thing added is Apple's Siri AI, which Apple declares is more personal, more capable and more conversational.

Siri AI can consider personal context to help users get information from messages, emails and photos. It can also decipher what's on the screen and act in accordance with that information.

A new Siri mode in the Camera app will also give information regarding objects or scenes in front of the user.

Apple claims its AI capabilities run on the device itself and with Private Cloud Compute, are designed to keep user data private and secure.

New iPhone 18 Pro Colors

Apple is selling the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in four colours:

  • Black
  • Silver
  • Glacier
  • Burgundy

One of the features of this generation is the new Burgundy finish.

Storage Options

The Pro models come in with:

  • 256GB
  • 512GB
  • 1TB
  • 2TB

It provides a number of options for users who primarily use their iPhone for everyday tasks, photography, video recording or professional workloads.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Price

The two models will go on for pre-order starting on September 12, 2026, and will be available on September 18, 2026.

India has been included in the first launch markets.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro Max

Both models feature several common technologies, like the A20 Pro chip, the 48MP variable aperture Main camera, Apple Intelligence and the new Dynamic Island.

The only major distinction is the Pro Max size and size of its battery.

The iPhone 18 Pro Max could last up to 45 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 18 Pro can last up to 36 hours.

The iPhone 18 Pro could be a better option for users seeking a more compact Pro iPhone model. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is the option for anyone looking for the biggest display and the longest battery life.

Final Thoughts

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are a significant leap in Apple's Pro iPhone lineup.

The new 48MP variable-aperture camera offers greater creative flexibility for photographers, and the A20 Pro chip brings enhanced performance and AI processing capabilities.

The revamped thermal system, battery enhancements and new Siri AI capabilities are among the many additions to the Pro iPhones' capabilities.
